Christmas in Maine
Melissa and I spent Christmas in Maine with her family. We had a really good trip, with pretty good weather. There was snow on the ground, but the roads were clear.
Here is a link to some more photos from our trip.

Mattamuskeet
I went on a class field trip to Hyde County to observe wildlife. We saw 17 deer in about three hours on the stand we were in. One other group said they saw black bears, another group said they saw red wolves. Below is a link to more photos. Some of them are kinda graphic, showing a harvested deer being processed.

Weymouth Woods
My Principles of Wildlife Science class took a trip to Weymouth Woods to see the mature pine forest habitat that the red-cockaded woodpecker prefers.
We didn't see any RCWs, but we saw salamanders, a beaver dam, the various stages of the successional pine forests and a fox squirrel.

Mount Rogers
Melissa and I took the dogs camping in the Mount Rogers National Recreation area. We camped one night in the Beartree campground and got seriously rained out. The next morning we packed up and drove over to the Appalachian Trail and did some hiking. We got locked in the parking lot when the visitors center closed but I drove around the fence on the side of the road and we got out. We ran into a guy who was hiking the entire AT so we took him into town and he got some pizza and Pepsi after his 20-mile hike in the rain.

4th of July
We got back today from our annual 4th of July trip to the beach with Kim, Jamie, Tommy, Tyler and Daddy. Sunburned again! We used sunscreen but not quite enough. We had a great time and took a lot of pictures.

Camping trip
We had a great time camping with John and Jackie in the Smoky Mountains. The synchronouse lightning bugs were amazing. I wasn't able to get a picture of the lightning bugs but I did figure out how to get pretty cool waterfall pictures.

Camping weekend
We're going camping this weekend with our friends John and Jackie at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We've never been to the Smokies so we're excited. No pets are allowed on most of the trails so we'll be camping without Baxter and Alaska.
